Instruments and accessories

Surgical instruments. Developed with experience and implemented with pragmatism.

We support our customers in medical technology in the development and industrialization of surgical instruments. From the initial idea to stable production. Our experience covers the entire spectrum: mechanical instruments, energy-transmitting systems (HF, RF, ultrasound), integrated electronics and customized disposable and reusable accessories.

We work in interdisciplinary teams and contribute our expertise in mechanics, electronics, software & firmware, project management, prototyping and industrialization. We always view surgical instruments as part of an overall system: clinical workflow and use, usability, compatibility with generators and peripherals, reprocessing, packaging and sterility are integral components of our development work.

Instruments

We know the economic, technical and regulatory requirements

  • Passive instruments: mechanical cutting, gripping and holding instruments, probes, modular mechanisms and actuation systems.
  • Active instruments: monopolar and bipolar instruments for electrosurgery, advanced energy, applicators, flexible probes and instruments for electrosurgery, RF and ultrasound surgery.
  • Electronically integrated solutions: Energy paths, electronic assemblies, embedded software and firmware, protection and isolation concepts, instrument detection and development of suitable generator modes.
  • Instruments for robot-assisted surgery: modular instruments, custom-fit interfaces to robotic systems, reliable transmission concepts, precision mechanics in confined spaces.
  • Open or minimally invasive applications: endoscopic & laparoscopic instruments or instruments for open surgery, rigid or flexible, ergonomic operating concepts.

Single-use, multi-use or hybrid

We develop tools to match the product strategy

  • Single-use: cost-optimized mechanical designs, production-oriented design and economical manufacturing processes.
  • Multi-use: durable mechanisms, material selection for reprocessing and robust joining techniques.
  • Hybrid concepts: combination of reusable basic parts and replaceable functional components.

We consider issues such as reconditioning, wear, energy transfer, material compatibility and service life at an early stage.

Accessories and components

We not only develop the instrument, but also the environment and are happy to support you during the process

  • Accessories for surgical procedures: trocars, dilators, guiding and insertion aids, sterile covers, adapters.
  • Accessories and devices for production or reprocessing: cleaning adapters, test gauges, test specimens, containers, mechanical or electronic aids.
  • Sterility and packaging: blisters, trays, insert solutions, pouches. Consideration of the requirements for the sterilization process.

We develop all parts in such a way that they are clinically useful, producible, resilient and standard-compliant.

Systems engineering and technical understanding

Analysis of requirements, clinical processes, technologies, standards and risks. Definition of the system architecture, functional principles, interfaces and safety functions.

Prototyping & Testing

Functional models, test devices, measuring tools and test setups for early technical validation. Verification of functional models and prototypes.

Mechanical, electronic and firmware development

Interdisciplinary development with clear responsibilities and short iterations. Product engineering in accordance with DIN EN ISO 13485 and risk management in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14971.

Industrialization

Design-for-manufacturing, material and supply chain concepts, process development, qualification, design transfer and production start-up.

Ergonomics and usability

Operating logic, haptics, intuitive handling. Tailored to clinical application and normative requirements. Usability in accordance with IEC 62366.

Regulatory requirements

Implementation of relevant norms and standards (including DIN EN ISO 13485, IEC 60601, IEC 62304, DIN EN ISO 14971, IEC 62366, DIN EN ISO 10993). Technical documentation, risk analysis, verification, traceability.

Typical technical challenges that we solve

  • Energy transmission (HF, RF, ultrasound)
  • Precision mechanics in the smallest installation space
  • Cleaning and reprocessing
  • Ergonomic and intuitive operation
  • Biocompatibility
  • Durability and wear
  • Robust interfaces to robots, consoles or energy sources
  • Packaging and sterility
  • Material selection and production optimization for series quantities

Your benefit

  • Understanding of the entire value and application chain
  • Interdisciplinary development with a deep understanding of the clinic, production and standards
  • Technical risks secured at an early stage through tests and prototypes
  • Production-ready solutions that work in clinical and production terms
  • Points of contact who solve complex technical issues in an understandable and targeted manner

We combine technical depth with a pragmatic sense of implementation and take production into account. So that surgical instruments not only work in the operating theater, but also in production.
